Tim’s TARDIS Beanie (Pattern)

IMG_1617 (1)

Timothy!

For Timothy’s 21st birthday (in, erm, November) I gave him the gift of all of time and space in the form of a TARDIS hat!

(Note: this is modified from a pattern in Last-Minute Knitted Gifts. It’s one of my favorite knitting books – and funnily enough was a last minute gift itself – and I HIGHLY recommend investing in it)

Supplies:
Needles: Size 9 circular (16 in), four or five size 9 DPN.
Yarn: Blue, white, black
Could come in handy: Stitch marker, yarn needle, bobble maker

Sizes
Women (Men)

Base
Cast on 80 (88).
Working in the round, work K1, P1 ribbing for about 3 inches
Work in St st (K all around) until the St st part is a bit longer than the ribbing (eventually you will fold the ribbing up and over this)

From here on out, everything is in St st

Windows <12/31/14 – these are wrong, will update soon>
Work with both white and blue, carrying the unused color behind. The pattern is different for women (80) and men (88). Note: Keep the carry-behind color fairly loose, but not too much so.

Police Box
I based my chart on Randi Sanders’ TARDIS Hat, but I had to reduce the width (from 50 per cycle to 40/44). I also added an extra row of black to both the top and bottom. Here ya go:

Back to Blue
Knit St st for a few rows. I recommend around 4-5. (Err on the side of fewer – I think I did 6 and it was a bit long)

Crown
Knit 8, k2tog around; knit straight one row. Knit 7, k2tog around; knit next row. Etc until finished. Women’s will have 10 panels, men’s will have 11.

Bobble
Make a blue and white bobble and attach to the top. You can either buy a bobble maker or make one of cardboard. Check out this tutorial:

Now go off and save the universe. Allons-y!
